Getting a driving licence in Macau

1. Choose a driving school

You apply for the driving exams through a driving school. The school stamps your application form and your instructor signs it. Before you can take the exams, you must finish the lessons the rules require.

See the driving schools and what each one teaches.

2. Apply for the exams

The first time you apply, bring:

  • the application form (Form No. 1)
  • your driver's medical certificate (the original)
  • a photocopy of your Macau identity card (it must still be valid), or of the document that lets you stay in Macau legally
  • four recent colour photos, 1.5 inches, with a white background

You don't need to bring the medical certificate on paper if you got it from a Health Bureau health centre, the Workers' Medical Clinic, Kiang Wu Hospital, University Hospital or Macau Yinkui Hospital.

The Transport Bureau is at Estrada de D. Maria II, No. 33. It is open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm.

How old you must be:

Light motorcycle, heavy motorcycle or light car18
Heavy goods vehicle, heavy passenger vehicle or articulated vehicle21

To learn to drive a bus: for D1, you need a category C licence, or a category B licence you have had for at least 3 years. For D2, you need a category C licence you have had for at least 1 year, or a D1 licence.

3. Your learner licence

The learner licence costs MOP 600. With it, you may drive only on roads set aside for learning or exams, and only with your instructor or an examiner.

If you are learning to ride a motorcycle, you must show third-party insurance to get your learner licence.

4. The theory test

The theory test comes first. See the test format, or practise with the mock test.

After you pass, you have 2 years to apply for the road test.

5. The road test

See what happens in the road test. If you pass, you get a temporary driving licence right away.

If you fail the road test or miss it, you can apply again and pay the fee again. You must do this within 2 years of passing the theory test.

What each step costs: fees.
