Macau Driving Theory

Driving licences from other places

Using a licence from another country in Macau, and a Macau licence abroad.

Exchanging your licence without a test

This is for people with a Macau Resident Identity Card. Bring:

  • form 011/DLC
  • your identity card
  • two photos
  • your original driving licence
  • a driver's medical certificate

Your licence must be a full licence that is still valid. It cannot be a learner or provisional licence, and it cannot be damaged, lost or stolen.

If your licence is not in Chinese, Portuguese, English or French, bring a translation into Chinese or Portuguese.

Licences from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Michigan (USA), Korea, the Philippines and South Africa need extra documents. If your licence is from Portugal, New Zealand, Ireland, Poland or Denmark, the Transport Bureau keeps it when it gives you your Macau licence.

It costs MOP 2,000, plus 10% stamp duty. To get it faster with the urgent service, pay MOP 400 more.

To see which licences can be exchanged, check the official page.

The special driving exam

If you have a driving licence from mainland China or another country, you can take the special driving exam for the same or a similar type of vehicle.

If you don't have a Macau Resident Identity Card, you can only apply for a light car, heavy motorcycle or light motorcycle.

If your licence is not in Chinese, Portuguese, English or French, you need a translation.

International driving licence

This is for people with a Macau licence who want to drive in other countries. Apply at the Transport Bureau counter (book an appointment first) with form 043/DLC and one photo, or online through Macao One Account. It costs MOP 300, plus 10% stamp duty.

If you apply at the counter before 4 pm, you can collect it the next working day.
